Around 1917, a group of Christians began meeting for worship in the old Netherland school building. In February of 1927, the land and building was purchased from the county by J.B., W.C. and Lester Hastings. The following are among the ones that had a part in the beginning of the construction in 1917: J.B. and Linnie Hastings; W.C. and Alpha Hastings; Lester and Julie Hastings; Mattie Poteet; Hazel Hastings; and Sallie Hastings.

Netherland is fortunate to have these families still represented in our congregation today by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Like many smaller churches of that time, there was not a regular
minister and subsequently many men have filled the pulpit over the years. A Brother Allen, was the first minister to hold services at Netherland. When he was available to hold services, he would walk from his home in Algood on Sunday Mornings and hold services at the little Church meeting in the one room schoolhouse at Netherland. Later, in the 1930's, Brother Collins from Algood would catch the train headed North to Livingston and ride to the depot at Netherland where he made his way by foot or caught a ride to the Church building where services were held in the afternoon.

The church continued to grow, and the waters of Spring Creek, just south of the church building, was the place of birth for many new Christians. By October of 1934, the church was being shepherded by elders and the building and property were deeded to the eldership in that month. Adjoining land was purchased and donated to be used as a cemetery. In 1941 a new building was constructed, but by the 1980's the membership had outgrown that building. In 1984, our current building was built and we continue to grow in numbers and in spirit.

In the early 1950's, Brother Perry Wilmoth became a full-time minister. Later, his sons Carl and Paul filled the pulpit at Netherland. Over the years, many fine men have served the congregation well by delivering messages from the Word of God.

Mark A. Loftis is our current minister, he and his family have been with the congregation since 1992.

Many new families and individuals continue making Netherland their home congregation and they too are in the process of writing the history of this congregation. However, we owe a debt of gratitude to those who came before and worked so hard that we may enjoy this fellowship today. May God bless the ones that have gone on to their rewards and by His Grace we shall join them when our labors here have ended.
